UPDATE. Here's one photo I scanned off of my role. Some of the images definitely have potential. There's lots of nice compositions, colors, and shapes. Though I think it'll take a lot of dog show attendances before any true, content-driven portfolio begins to develop.

1/31/11: Today I'm picking up my negatives from the dog show extravaganza that was last week. The Rose City Classic.

A couple friends and I hopped back and forth between events for a few hours at the Expo Center, snapping shots of the devastation of fur in the grooming area, the pride on the platforms, and the wonderful apparel. There were snoozies, sweaters, dachsund tapestries...anything the eye can image, plus more which you probably couldn't image.

An ink jet printout of Neil Armstrong on the moon - I went over the printout and tried to match the tones with an ink wash, but as I overlayed the wash, trying to recreate and match the image, the ink jet print spread and bled. This is the back

Have been thinking about Emily Dickinson a great deal now today, especially after reading her a lot yesterday, specifically the poem After Great Pain, a Formal Feeling Comes. Here's the final stanza:

Am thinking about how she uses the em dash...as both a pause and a breath, both a breathing out and breathing in, both a connecting thread (e.g. to the next line)/point of potential, as well as a repose or blackout. Feel there's a strong relation to the way I'm working with some of my drawings, attempting to invert the positive and negative space, back and forth.

Here's the rest:

Took film stills from Psycho, i.e. scenes surrounding the murder of Marion, compiled them in photoshop and messed with the opacity of the layers. Then I rotated it clockwise... Now it looks like a Rauschenberg.

I've been studying the Psycho film very closely, pulling out film stills from it, relating it to some of Goya's work - his compositions, how does Goya (master printmaker) create anxiety in the picture plane as compared to how Hitchcock (master filmmaker) creates anxiety.

Lucky, because the next day I drove by the billboard and it had changed. No more Rolex in the cliffs.

I recently rediscovered this photo I took at the MoMA when I was in NY a couple years ago.

While wandering the museum I saw this woman, who had stopped to smile and pose for a photo with Andy Warhol's Orange Car Crash 14 Times...there was something so wrong about this, yet so right? or appropriate at least...in some way.

gone with the wind

I'm working on this altered book, where I'm erasing the entirety of the text in Gone with the Wind, except the mentions of Rhett Butler. What can I say, survival of the fittest!

By "erasing," I mean I am using tape to pull off the ink of the book's text. This leaves me with these wonderful little curls of text-filled tape, which resemble toenail clippings, or little shredded locks of hair...perhaps I could put them in jars and label them "chapter 1," "chapter 2" etc. These are featured at the top of this post! and also in shambles, in the last pic of this post

Week 4: LaVerne Krause Gallery. James Herman, Evan Kornfeld, and me

This locker piece was so weird. titled Capsized...but i think i just needed to get it out of my system. It wasn't a particularly good piece, but I think it was an important one for me -- it was a template/mixing pallet for a lot of ideas I'd like to explore more. It's hundreds of screenprinted copies of a diary entry I made as a kid; all i ever wrote about were boys. in this particular passage i was infatuated with a boy named zach in my grade...it's about obsession, youthful infatuation, ideals of love, bookish people fantasizing about love, whatever. I love the sort of cinematic, spectacle, stagelike presence of the piece. When I was building the work, a friend popped in and said, "woow, this is, like, totally Goddard-ian."...i think this is due partially to the color schemes (very 60s-film, thanks Fellini), but also because of the clear over-shooting ambitions of the creator behind the work. does that make sense? yea, sorry i didn't think so. well, anyways i think my intricate folding method (turkish map fold) is a bit "displaced," if you will, (teehee), it's a little distracting. the lockers are perhaps heavy-handed (though admittedly humorous, the visiting artist, Jovencio de la Paz, commented).

This piece of Jamie's was really fun to photograph...feet upon feet of twisted mylar (printed with his top 100 velvet underground songs) with 100 mylar balloons perched atop. the balloons did great things for the space - they reflected the space in a wonderful way. in them you could see the other pieces in the gallery, and it brightened up the show. the piece was also placed across from the entrance, so they caught people's eye as they walked by. There's something kind of magical about the takedown too, which I did today (Friday, after the show was up for 5 days)...the gallery is such a transitory space. You take over for one week, working ridiculous hours into a piece, and then 5 days later, it's completely gone. As friend Jenny said, the student galleries are like the subconscious of the art department. If only these walls could talk.

laverne krause show, part deux

My weaving pieces, Corpus Delecti (featured elsewhere in this blog!), had a surprisingly good reception. I did the pieces a year ago, and they hadn't seen the light since then. Got a lot of comments on them. I'm still not sold on the display of them. I don't think they should appear in a row like this. They need to be spaced out, and less regular and predictable in their layout. Unfortunately I only had a little space to work with, and it was late on Sunday night (the opening being the next day :s )

I love the clarity and decisive, yet ambiguous nature of this series. This piece is called Mask IV. It's such a decisive act, plastering a rigid landscape directly on top of a man's face, yet the affect is one, again, of instability and ambiguity

I'm officially obsessed with Fellini, and his wife for that matter. There's a great documentary that came with the criterion collection of La Strada. Included are some great Fellini interviews, where you see him at his most poetic, clever, witty, etc.:

"Perhaps the attempt to recapture, to hear once more an utterance that's been interrupted, repeated each time with a weaker and weaker voice, until I could no longer hear it. Coffins for (preserved) bugs. Using a faux tintype process (a trad tintype would have a black background - rather than my almond color - and the printed image would flicker on and off the surface as you moved the print around). I put them into these mint tins (that's the first image)...trying to mimic the traditional Victorian daguerrotype portraits with the metal cases/frames. I need to embellish and decorate the mint tins though. They are bare bones right now.

Some more of the bug-coffin prints. I was using a particular kind of liquid emulsion called Black Magic. As you apply it to your surface, it dries quickly. In the streaky prints, the emulsion dried before I fully coated the surface. Sometimes the streaks work for the image, sometiiimes they don't.

it's creepy baby elizabeth :) Dunno what's up with all the dolls. I think there's some series budding there. Note the left index finger that i probably ingested at an early age

cyanotype on kitty cotta paper - the paper renders great details, and the blue is a beautiful, rich blue (the reproduction does it no justice), but the paper has the tendency to completely fall apart in the wash. i remedied this by placing a tray underneath the paper while washing it... unfortunately this left the weird striations/indentations that you see running diagonally across the image. i may be able to get rid of these by running the piece through the etching press at a really high pressure; we'll see.

The more purple colored pieces have been toned (sodium carbonate + tannic acid)

My first foray in to weaving/tapestry.

I was working off of this "landscape" photo I took with my Holga camera mod'ed for 35 mm film. Once I realized there was no way I could achieve photorealism in the tapestry, I just picked up some untraditional wefts and went to town. Actually all of those strange materials are fabrics and things mom gave me this summer while she was moving out of our house and cleaning out her craft supplies. It's nostalgic

I embroidered some utilitarian items (i.e. dish towel, pillow case) in the style of a traditional embroidery sampler, but my quote sources were a bit headier, specifically metaphysical and attempt to describe the nature of exist or Being (vs. "being"...thanks for the clarification Heidegger).

I decided to post a few photos I made last fall -- it's part of a self-portrait (?) series. Essentially it was me wandering around my house naked, setting up a tripod, setting the camera's timer, and posing. They are all c-prints. Some of the color balance is cringeworthy -- I'm so bummed I no longer have access to a color processor :s

I decided to call the series Idem, which is the root for the word "identity." Oddly enough, "idem" means sameness. I photographed myself in situations where my body was mimicking forms in my house (i.e. my neck is the slope of the sink's neck, my back is the broadside of soap); I was living alone at this point, and there was something psychological occurring between myself and my living space. There's an odd melding of self and site that occurs when you live alone for so long. You begin to identify yourself as part of your surroundings...you become what you live with. It's maybe similar to couples who have lived together for a long time, and begin to take on an uncanny resemblance of one another. Or the owner and dog who bear an uncanny resemblance of one another.

I like the anxiety in the photos, and the voyeuristic quality of them...there's the sense that there's a ghostly presence in the house. I showed these photos in a class and one of the comments from another student was that it looks as though someone had been following me around my house, taking these voyeuristic photos, whiiich probably reflects my abnormal paranoia I have of being cased and robbed...

There's also a nice little pun with the word Idem -- Idem is a homophone with "item," which is how I wanted my body to appear, as a mere item. Unfortunately I recently discovered another photographer/conceptual artist who has adopted the moniker "Idem-Item." Damn him.

This was a Jacquard loom project that went a little awry. I was using plastic bags as my weft. I used a heat gun to manipulate the weave, to bulge it and break it.

I went into this second hand store once that displayed its wedding dresses by hanging them from the ceiling. It was eerie, like some congegration of jilted brides hovering and floating above my head. It got me thinking about hope chests that were never emptied, lockets never filled, unrequited love etc. So I made this piece. It's definitely pathetic and sad, I can say I channeled those energies just fine.

I think I was looking at Petah Coyne too much. It just looks like a cheap imitation to me anymore. I want to call it This Is What It Sounds Like, When Doves Cry...

I constructed bedsheets and pillow covers from 100+ coffee napkins that another student had screenprinted on (the "ink" was actually coffee). I noticed the pattern he had printed looked especially nice in repeat, so here it is. Another Jacquard project. I was weaving crime photos taken from police archives -- mainly the NYPD archives. All the photos are from the early 1910s. Many of the victims are nameless; in the case of the NYPD archives the photos were stashed in a file under a staircase. I think it was in the '80s when they went through their archives and literally threw a number of these photos away (into the river, I believe). A stash of them survived. This is my sort of tribute, memento mori to them. I did a lot of embroidering and mending on the pieces when I took them off the loom. They're in shadow boxes
